Prevent Blindness has declared the month of August Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. The goal of this initiative is to educate parents and caregivers on ways to keep children’s eyes healthy.
According to a press release from the company,1 Prevent Blindness is providing multiple free resources online covering a variety of topics such as myopia, amblyopia, strabismus and more.
In addition to the online resources, Prevent Blindness has published an interview between Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness, and R.V. Paul Chan, MD, MSC, MBA, FACS, Head, department of ophthalmology and visual sciences, The John H. Panton Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, and director, pediatric retina and retinopathy of prematurity Service, Illinois Eye and Ear, UI Health. The interview, titled “Children’s Vision and Eye Health,”Chan shares his expertise on amblyopia, myopia, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) and other children’s vision issues.
Todd commented on bringing light to child eye health in the press release.
“For 115 years, we’ve made it our mission to ensure that children have access to the eyecare they need,” said Todd. “By working as a team with parents, our program partners, and allied healthcare personnel, we help children take their first steps toward a lifetime of healthy vision.”
Looking forward to the upcoming solar eclipses, Prevent Blindness will offer “Solar Eclipse Viewing Party Family and Children’s Toolkits,” available free for download. The toolkits contain ideas and activities for children to learn about eclipses and about the importance of eye safety while viewing them.
