Anthony Mai, MD: Hi, My name is Tony Mai. I'm a fourth year resident at the Moran Eye Center. So my project here at EnVision was something of a case study for patients. We looked at the miCOR 700 device, which is a new device from Zeiss. This is something that we think can replace, or even be an alternative to the regular phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and it is not commercially available yet. It was actually something that was given to the branch to try to see how it works, as well as a couple of other institutions around the States. And so, when it first came to the branch, I was lucky enough to be there with my attending Dr. Jeff Petty, who was able to try it for the very first time himself, and also for the first time at the Moran too. And so we were there in a single day doing these cataract surgeries with the miCOR device, which is really cool because it does not use any ultrasound energy. It just uses something that they call mechanical agitation, and has a pump inside of the handpiece also, and so no console is needed. There is no foot pedal. There isn't any other machine outside of the handpiece and an external irrigation source for BSS. That's it's very minimalistic, very sleek. And so, we were able to do this on the patients. They did great; achieved the refractive outcomes by post op month 1. And we think that this could be a really good alternative for phacoemulsification especially for places that might not have the funds for this. And there's some thought that this might even be safer than phaco because there's less heat, there's no ultrasound. So even for trainees this could be an alternative to.

Peg Achenbach, OD, FAAO: So is this your first time at the EnVision Summit?

Anthony Mai, MD: This is my very first time.

Peg Achenbach, OD, FAAO: So what do you think of the EnVision Summit meeting?

Anthony Mai, MD: Absolutely incredible. I feel like everyone should come. I mean, it's Puerto Rico, and we've had so much fun here visiting the beach, and a waterpark. Just enjoying the sun in the sand is probably the best conference I've ever been to.
