The retina space continues to see new advancements and clinical trial results, many of which are shared at industry conferences throughout the year.
The medical community, and especially the ophthalmology community, is constantly working towards advancements to better patient outcomes. The industry is also developing new tools and technologies that can assist with early detection of conditions, visual assistance, and alternative treatments.
These advancements are often discussed at the medical conferences held around the world, where lead investigators and researchers gather to present data sets and discuss practical and real-world applications. This year, Modern Retina has been covering such meetings both in-person and virtually to bring you the latest news.
As we look back over quarter 3 of the 2024, here are a few of the interviews from these conferences that we consider “must-watch” moments!
Sruthi Arepalli, MD, spoke with Modern Retina about her presentation, "Assessing retinal vascular changes in alzheimer disease with radiomics: A preliminary study of fundus photography" at the annual ASRS meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.
Stephanie Marioneaux, MD, gives insight into the inspiration and research discussed in her talk “First in Medicine: An African American perspective from 1700 to 1940" as the Patricia Bath Distinguished Lecture at the National Medical Association's annual conference in New York City, NY.
Hannah Chiu, MD, FRCSC, sat down with our editorial team to provide an overview of an AI-operated telephone call system for routine post-surgical follow-up, which has shown safety, efficacy, and acceptability in both the UK and Canada. The AI call helps identify red flags and reduces the need for in-person visits, saving patients travel and family members' time off work. Patient feedback has been positive, with an 8 out of 10 recommendation score, Chiu adds. Although this study is being conducted among patients who have received cataract surgery, the hope is that similar AI postoperative care may be implemented for other types of surgical procedures. Here are some of the highlights of Chiu’s discussion with Group Editorial Director Sheryl Stevenson.
Srinivas R. Sadda, MD, spoke about the EURETINA meeting, his presentation on ultra widefield imaging, and the value of the international community of retina clinicians connecting in person at meetings. The interview took place at the EURETINA 2024 meeting held in Barcelona, Spain, on September 19-22, 2024.
Stay tuned in the coming months as Modern Retina covers one of the biggest meetings of the year, The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) conference taking place in Chicago in October 2024.
