The OSN New York Retina meeting is set to take place over the weekend of November 8 to 10, 2024. At this meeting retina specialists will gather to discuss the several conditions affecting their patients as well as the treatment options and research surrounding these diseases.

Ahead of the meeting, Modern Retina is highlighting a few of the presentations that will be given on the topics of geographic atrophy (GA), diabetic macular edema (DME), and diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Geographic atrophy

On Saturday, November 9, Danny A. Mammo, MD, from the Cleveland Clinic will give a presentation entitled, “Identifying the Right Candidate for GA Therapy.” This talk will provide attendees with a better understanding of working with GA patients to understand the burden of treatment as well as which patients may see the most beneficial results from the currently approved FDA treatments.

Later that morning, Katherine E. Talcott, MD, will speak on the “Pipeline Treatments for Geographic Atrophy.” In this presentation, she will highlight the potential treatments that are in development, the stage of clinical trial, and how these candidates use different methods of action in treating GA.

Diabetic macular edema

On Saturday, there will be an interesting discussion on the use of steroids to treat DME. Royce W.S. Chen, MD will present the “Yay” side of the debate, noting the benefits and potential successes of using steroids. Following this, Mathieu Bakhoum, MD, PhD, will argue the “Nay” side of the discussion, highlighting the drawbacks and side effects that these treatments can have.

After both sides have presented, those in attendance will discuss their perspectives, ask questions to each other, and vote on their preferred method, whether it be the Yay or Nay side of the discussion.

Diabetic retinopathy

On the first day of the conference, November 8, the afternoon will be filled with several notable presentations on DR. Andrew A. Moshfeghi, MD, MBA, will give the talk, “Anti-VEGF for DR in Modern Retina Practice.” Following this, Katherine E. Talcott, MD, will share thoughts on “High Done Anti-VEGF Options for DME and DR.” Both of these presentations will provide an overview of current VEGF options for retina specialists as they work to preserve vision in the DR patients.

Later in the afternoon, Justis P. Ehlers, MD, will give a presentation entitled, Quantitative Ultra-Widefield Leakage Assessment in Diabetic Retinopathy: New Insights into Progression Risk.” This will provide attendees with insights to consider as they see DR patients in their clinics and work to monitor how they condition is affecting their daily life.
